SSAT vs ISEE: the differences that matter
For families deciding between the two independent school admission tests.
Last updated September 27, 2026.
The short answer
- Both are admission tests for independent schools, and many schools accept either one. Check each school's requirements first.
- The SSAT takes off a quarter point for a wrong answer. The ISEE has no penalty.
- SSAT Verbal is synonyms and analogies. ISEE Verbal is synonyms and sentence completions.
- SSAT questions have five answer choices. ISEE questions have four.
- Since March 2026, both tests are run by the same nonprofit, E3n, formed when EMA (the SSAT's publisher) and ERB (the ISEE's publisher) merged. The two tests have not changed for the 2026 to 2027 admission year.
Side by side (Middle and Upper Level)
| SSAT | ISEE | |
|---|---|---|
| Run by | E3n (formerly EMA) | E3n (formerly ERB) |
| Answer choices | 5 (A to E) | 4 (A to D) |
| Wrong answers | Lose 1/4 point | No penalty |
| Verbal | 60 questions in 30 min: synonyms and analogies | 40 questions in 20 min: synonyms and sentence completions |
| Math | Two Quantitative sections, 25 questions in 30 min each | Quantitative Reasoning (37 in 35 min) and Mathematics Achievement (47 in 40 min) |
| Reading | 40 questions in 40 min | 36 questions in 35 min |
| Writing | 25 minutes, not scored, sent to schools | 30 minutes, not scored, sent to schools |
| Total time | About 3 hours with breaks | About 3 hours with breaks |
| Scores | Scaled score and percentile | Scaled score, percentile, and stanine (1 to 9) |
| Retakes | Several chances a year across test dates and formats | Once per testing season, up to three times a year |
Both tests have lower levels too. The SSAT Elementary Level is for students in grades 3 and 4, and the ISEE has Primary and Lower Levels.
The differences that matter most
Guessing
On the ISEE, a blank and a wrong answer both score zero, so students should answer every question. On the SSAT, a wrong answer costs a quarter point, so students need a plan for when to guess. The habits are opposite, which is why it helps to practice for the specific test. See the SSAT guessing penalty, explained.
Verbal question types
Both tests use synonyms. The SSAT adds analogies, which ask how two words are related and which pair of words shares that relationship. The ISEE adds sentence completions, which ask for the word or phrase that best fits a sentence. Students who like word puzzles often enjoy analogies. Students who read a lot often find sentence completions natural.
Math
The SSAT's two Quantitative sections mix math reasoning and computation. The ISEE splits math into Quantitative Reasoning, which at the Middle and Upper Levels includes quantitative comparison questions, and Mathematics Achievement, which is closer to school math. Neither test allows a calculator.
Pace
SSAT Verbal moves fast, at about 30 seconds per question. ISEE Reading and math sections give a little less time per question than the SSAT. See SSAT timing, section by section.
How to choose
- Check each school. Some require one test, and many accept either.
- Try both formats. A timed practice section of each shows which question types feel more natural to your child.
- Think about timing and retakes. The SSAT offers more test dates in a year. The ISEE limits students to one test per season.
- Pick one and focus. Preparing for both at once splits practice time, and the guessing habits conflict.
How SSAT Coach helps with this
SSAT Coach is built for the SSAT format: five answer choices, synonyms and analogies, two Quantitative sections, the SSAT's time limits, and scoring with the quarter-point penalty. The free practice test is a quick way to see how the SSAT feels before you decide. If your child is taking the ISEE, our sister site ISEE Coach works the same way for the ISEE.
Full-length and timed, for the Middle or Upper Level. No credit card.
Common questions
Is the SSAT or the ISEE harder?
Neither is harder overall. They test similar skills in different formats. The SSAT has a guessing penalty and analogies; the ISEE has sentence completions and a separate math achievement section. Many students find one format suits them better.
Do schools prefer the SSAT or the ISEE?
Many independent schools accept either one and do not prefer one over the other. Some require a specific test, so check each school's admission page.
Can you take both the SSAT and the ISEE?
Yes. Some families do, especially when applying to schools with different requirements. Preparing for one at a time works best, because the guessing strategies are opposite.
Does the ISEE have a guessing penalty?
No. The ISEE has no penalty for wrong answers, so students should answer every question. The SSAT takes off a quarter point for each wrong answer.
How many answer choices are on the SSAT and the ISEE?
SSAT questions have five answer choices, A to E. ISEE questions have four, A to D.
