SSAT scores explained: score ranges, percentiles, and what counts as good
For parents of Middle and Upper Level students: how to read SSAT scores and what they mean for applications.

The short answer
- The SSAT reports a scaled score for Verbal, Quantitative, and Reading, plus a total. The writing sample is not scored.
- Middle Level sections range from 440 to 710 (total 1320 to 2130). Upper Level sections range from 500 to 800 (total 1500 to 2400).
- The percentile compares a student with other students in the same grade. It is usually the most useful number for families and schools.
- There is no single good score. It depends on the schools, and the SSAT is one part of the application.
From right answers to a scaled score
Scoring happens in three steps.
- Raw score. For each section, one point for each right answer, minus a quarter point for each wrong answer. Blanks count as zero. (The Elementary Level has no quarter-point penalty.)
- Scaled score. The raw score is converted to a scaled score. This step adjusts for small differences in difficulty between test forms, so a score means the same thing on any test date.
- Percentile. The scaled score is compared with the scores of other students in the same grade.
The two Quantitative sections are combined into one Quantitative score. The experimental section and the writing sample do not count.

Scaled scores at different levels are on different ranges, so a Middle Level score and an Upper Level score cannot be compared directly.
Why the percentile matters most
A student at the 60th percentile scored higher than 60 percent of the students in the same grade who took the SSAT. Percentiles account for grade, which the scaled score does not. An 8th grader and a 10th grader can both take the Upper Level, and the older student will usually earn a higher scaled score. The percentile compares each student with their own grade.
Why percentiles can look low
The students who take the SSAT are mostly strong students applying to independent schools. A 50th percentile score means a student is right in the middle of that group, which is very different from the 50th percentile on a test every student takes. Parents used to seeing their child in the 90s on school tests are often surprised by this.
What counts as a good SSAT score?
There is no single answer. Each school looks at scores alongside grades, recommendations, interviews, and the writing sample. Some schools share the typical score range of the students they admit, so the most useful step is to ask each school's admission office. For planning, a practical goal is to find where your child is now with one full practice test, then aim to raise the percentile in the one or two sections with the most room to grow.
Reading the score report
Along with the scaled scores and percentiles, the official score report breaks each section down by question type and shows how many questions were right, wrong, and left blank. That breakdown is useful for deciding what to practice before a retake.
